What are the benefits of PassivHaus construction?

A nearly zero energy building is a building that consumes, on average, 90% less energy than a traditional building. The PassivHaus standard is just that, a construction and design standard.

PassivHaus houses have way lower energy costs. Your electricity bill will be much lower. But that’s not all.

A PassivHaus certified house in Spain means much more. It is a much better construction. Forget about condensation dampness. Sleeping with three blankets, getting up in the morning and freezing. Forget about depending on an air conditioning system that can’t cope with heat waves.

It’s not just savings. It is also comfort.

But Francisco, a Passivhaus house is very expensive, isn’t it?

We have been asked this question several times. It seems that it is very expensive to build a Passivhaus house, but it is far from it. It is usually said that it is 10% more expensive than a traditional house. But maybe not even that.

You have to put in better windows. And a heat recovery system. And more thermal insulation. But for example, in most areas of Spain you will need a very small air conditioning installation. In some you won’t need air conditioning. In others you won’t need heating.

How much does a modern air-conditioning system cost – and the bill for switching it on?

It’s more than it costs to make it PassivHaus. In Spain we don’t need as much insulation as in other countries. It is not so cold.

And what do I gain by making my house PassivHaus?

The first thing is comfort. In your house you will have a controlled temperature between 21 and 25ºC during most of the year. And not only temperature, but also air. Forget about opening the windows. Quality filtered air throughout the house.

The second thing is savings. Don’t worry about your electricity bill. Don’t worry about how long the heating has been on. You won’t need to.

The third thing is value for money. A passive house costs relatively little more (we could accept the additional 10%), but the quality it gives off makes it worth more.

Having a PassivHaus certified house allows you to put a promotion panel on the house. It will convey a much higher building quality than any other. This is highly valued, particularly among knowledgeable people. It will therefore always be worth more than an equivalent.
